August Monthly Activity: Board Game Night at Shalom Cares

August 22, 2012

On Wednesday, August 22, Aurora Youth Options Mentor Program held its monthly activity with Shalom Cares nursing home patients, joining in on their weekly game night. The night started out with the group receiving a short briefing on the proper etiquette of working with elderly individuals. Mentor matches then went to residents’ rooms inviting them to play a game
of trivial pursuit and helping them to the game room. We divided up into teams; each team had equal numbers of AYO matches and Shalom Cares residents.
What a fun night our matches had interacting with the residents, answering the questions together. Mike an AYO mentor said, “Often youth, and even I, do not realize how easy it is to volunteer and to put a smile on someone else’s face. Tonight we did that by sitting down to a board game and by telling and listening to stories.” Everyone had a smile on their face and it was evident that they had fun volunteering their time and making someone else feel good. Everyone that night was a winner.
